Everyone else swoons over pumpkin spice. Me? My autumn fling is with a glue stick that plays hard to get and scissors that seem to have their own quirky sense of humor. Welcome to my paper-arts Halloween, where ghouls are more charming than trick-or-treaters and even the vampires bring good manners.





Haunted Mansions: Adorable Real Estate for the Afterlife

First up: my haunted mansion shadow box—a fixer-upper in the “undead but delightful” neighborhood. You’d expect cobwebs and creaks, but instead you get cute little ghouls leaning out the windows like they’re waiting for trick-or-treat room service. It’s less terror in the night and more Scooby-Doo meets boutique Airbnb.



The Cemetery Crew

Then I accidentally created a cemetery scene with three ghouls under the moon, surrounded by crows and pumpkins. But instead of looking scary, they give off total nightlife energy—like they’re working the velvet rope at a Halloween rave. You half expect them to check your wristband before you can step past the jack-o’-lanterns.



Vampire, Witch & A French PSA

There’s also my vampire and witch in a mausoleum piece, complete with a very stern French sign: “Il y a danger de mort à toucher aux fils même tombés.” Rough translation? “Don’t touch wires, darling, unless you’d like death with your aperitif.” Nothing says festive holiday décor like international electrical warning


The Tiny Blocks of Creepy Salvation

Finally, I made 2 x 2 inch blocks with cartoon-gothic faces. They’re small, they’re strange, and they’re the kind of thing you buy, put on a shelf, and then spend all day side-eyeing as they smirk back at you. They’re basically therapy, but cheaper.



Moon Magic: Halloween Goes Broadway

And oh, the “Moon Magic” box. Bright orange and black, a doll, a theatre performer, a girl sitting in a crescent moon, and a crow acting like a talent agent. Honestly, it’s less “Halloween decoration” and more “first draft for a spooky Vegas revue.” If Liberace had loved jack-o’-lanterns, this would’ve been his comeback show.



Why Do I Do This?

Because paper arts at Halloween are my religion. They keep me sane. While other people are baking pies, I’m cutting out bats and gluing crows to tiny cardboard graves. It’s kooky, it’s messy, and sometimes I end up with glitter in places that glitter should never be, but it’s joy. Pure, ridiculous joy.

Floating Like a Kite (and Occasionally Crashing Into a Tree)

 Somewhere between making tiny paper houses and bingeing TikTok with a cup of tea, I discovered a pattern: I start a creative project all fired up... and then? Poof. Disconnected. Bored. Not creatively bored, but bored in the "I no longer have the mental bandwidth to functionally move this forward" kind of way. My creative brain still wants to dance; my get-things-done brain has left the building.

It’s not burnout. Not quite. It’s more like a soft gray fog that rolls in, bringing with it a trio of unwelcome guests: meh, anxiety, and frustration. Together, they make a lovely little cocktail of "Why am I like this?" served with a twist of guilt.



The meh is a loss of spark. The anxiety is the pressure to keep producing, to not let the creative thread snap. The frustration is all about knowing the idea was so good and now it just... sits there. Like a leftover muffin that was once warm and perfect, and is now weirdly damp and existential.

I run an Etsy store selling miniature scenes and paper art. I dabble in POD on Zazzle. I nerd out on genealogy. And I also, apparently, run a full-time background process called "navigating my life while low-key waiting for a massive change to arrive."



And that’s the kicker. Change is coming — big, beautiful, terrifying change. The kind that is 100% planned and 0% fully arrived. So I’m in the waiting room of my own life. The creative pause before the next act. And even though I know it’s temporary, it still hits the same nervous system buttons I developed as a kid, constantly switching schools, floating through unfamiliar classrooms, never quite anchoring.

So when my brain says “nope” at the midpoint of a project, maybe it's not sabotage. Maybe it’s memory. Maybe it’s survival.

And yet… I wish I could keep going. Always. I want to follow through. I want to finish things. But my nervous system still thinks we’re moving any minute now, so why unpack?

What helps? Tea. TikTok. A little vacuuming. Not as avoidance — but as regulation. These are not escapes, they’re little grounding rituals. And lately, I’ve started to accept that maybe my shutdown moments aren’t wasted time. Maybe they’re the bridge between phases. Maybe they’re creative in their own way.

If I could turn this feeling into a paper scene, I’d make a shadow box with a street full of tiny houses and trees. A man standing on the ground. And me , tethered like a kite, floating among the clouds. The sky? It’d show every kind of weather: sun, storm, sunset, stars. Because that’s who I am. Not one thing. All of it.



So here’s my weather report for today: Partly foggy with patches of clarity, light winds of hope, 40% chance of emotional snacks.

And here’s my affirmation: I am not behind. I am becoming. Even in the pause, I am in motion.

 Blog Title: Paper Planes & Paper Trails: Off to the Land Down Under!

Well folks, it’s finally happening. Tonight, I climb aboard an Air New Zealand flight (aka a slightly glamorous nap tube) and fly straight into the future—literally and metaphorically. I’m heading back to Australia to begin the Great Paper Trail of 2025, also known as “Jem Attempts to Reclaim Her Permanent Residency and Her Dignity.”

Yes, it’s true. After years of being a bureaucratic ghost in a system that apparently doesn’t believe in the 1980s unless there’s a barcode, I’m off to lovingly wave documents at officials like they’re rare butterflies. Birth certificates, old school reports, passports with exotic stamps, and possibly a school photo where I’m blinking—but it all counts. Paper, none the less.



Paper in All Its Glory

This trip isn't just about legal limbo and sweaty-palmed appointments. It's about reconnection—with my longtime FRAMILY spread across Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. These are the humans who helped raise me, saved my sanity, lent me eyeliner, and offered couches, cups of tea, or long drives when life got a bit too life-y.


Flying Through Time Like a Tidy Origami Swan

There’s something wildly surreal about flying through time zones that fold and wrinkle like one of my old paper fortune tellers. Tonight, I board in the evening and arrive in Australia two days later, mildly dehydrated, with questionable hair, and full of excitement.

Special shout-out to Auckland Airport, my 4am liminal dreamscape, where I’ll do some elegant zombie-stretches and blink at airport art before catching my connection. It’s the perfect place to reassemble your soul after a long-haul flight—sort of like a metaphysical layover café.


So stay tuned, paper people! I’ll be popping in with updates, snaps from my travels, and possibly a deep poetic musing about boarding passes, origami cranes, and how home is wherever your glue stick lives.

I Was a Teenage Bureaucratic Ghost: Lost in the Tech Gap of Australian History

Let me set the scene. Melbourne, 1976. A girl in a Melbourne Girls' Grammar uniform, ponytail flying, heart in full swoon over her first boyfriend, walks out of class and heads to her after-school job at Petty’s Newsagency. She's stacking Woman’s Day and The Truth like a teenage origami prodigy, inhaling newsprint and dreaming of Mark Holden. That girl? Me. That life? Very real. But according to Australia’s current digital record system?


Digitally Deleted but Emotionally Downloaded

See, I’m applying for my Resident Return Visa (RRV), which involves proving that I once lived, loved, studied, worked, and probably overused Impulse body spray in Australia. But here’s the catch: because I lived my formative years before the Great Scanner Enlightenment of the late 90s, none of it counts. To today’s system, if it wasn’t scanned, it didn’t happen. I am a bureaucratic ghost. I am Schrödinger's citizen.

From the late 70s through the glorious, perms-and-synth-filled 80s, I was catching trams with friends, going to school, working weekends at the Honey Pot Health Food store (where we pretended carob was delicious), and using every spare dollar to buy Frampton Comes Alive—which, yes, I blasted until my parents begged me to try the new miracle called “headphones.” And all of that? Wiped from the historical record. No tax file trace. No school archives. Just a wistful breeze where my existence used to be.

I emailed the ATO for proof of my employment history and got a friendly reply that roughly translated to: “Yeah nah, love. We binned that in ‘94. Cheers.”

But I was there. I ate Vegemite on toast every morning. I watched Countdown religiously and Hey Hey It’s Saturday like it was my second religion. I tore pages out of magazines, hung up band posters before anyone had a Wikipedia page, and had a schoolbag full of pens that didn’t work and half-melted Lifesavers. I can still smell the eucalyptus from schoolyard trees and the yeasty cloud of the old South Yarra brewery drifting across the suburbs like a warm beer hug.

My records? They fell into the Technology Gap Abyss™, a bureaucratic Bermuda Triangle for people born before 1980. Not digitized. Not archived. Not real. We’re the analog ghosts of Australia’s memory banks, wailing into the cloud, “We were real! We had mood rings and blue eyeshadow!”

So now, for my RRV, I offer:

  • Crumpled passport pages resembling Dead Sea Scrolls
  • Letters from people who still remember Concerts at the Myer Music Bowl
  • School photos featuring blazers, flyaway fringe, and questionable eyebrow choices

It’s funny, isn’t it? In my twenties, back in the 80s, I was doing what you're supposed to do—studying, working, thriving, figuring out life between cassette tapes and part-time jobs. But now? I have to convince a faceless algorithm that my very existence is more than a formatting error.

What I wish the Department of Home Affairs could understand is this:
The 70s and 80s may not have left digital breadcrumbs, but they left something much more enduring—my connection to the country that raised me, shaped me, and still pulls me home. From lifelong friendships to the rhythm of the arts world my mum helped build, to the eternal Australian truth that a sausage roll and a ginger beer can fix just about anything.

No, I don’t have my 1979 tax assessment. But I can give you a guided tour of every Melbourne record shop I haunted, every suburb I lived in, and why the first bite of a Freddo Frog will always make me cry just a little.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go dig up another photo of myself wearing a school uniform and looking mildly confused by the 20th century.

This morning I thought about our dreams not just being sweet wanderings or sleepy fancies. They’re blueprints. They’re the sketches of the life we dare to imagine. What we think, we begin to build. It’s a reminder that no matter how cracked the world may seem, there’s still beauty blooming through.

This letter S collage is a scrapbook of joy, a kaleidoscope of everything I find beautiful—from vintage stamps to art nouveau curves, butterflies that probably time-traveled from 1905, and more florals than a Parisian hat shop in spring. Why S? Because it's my reminder that Self-expression is Sacred. Also... it's just really cute.

Things I Learned While Trying to Prove I’m a Real Human Being (Despite a Suspicious Number of Passports)

 I know this is technically a blog about art and paper—and yes, I’m currently on a paper trail that seems to have huge gaps but I’m going to veer off again and talk about the research I’ve been doing on my own life. It’s strange, really. After 26 years as a genealogist, I’m used to digging up century-old documents from dusty archives and church basements… and honestly, they were better at record-keeping than whatever happened when the world went from typewriters to tech. Somehow, my great-great-grandfather’s land deed from 1883 survived—but my employment record from 1987? Gone with the dial-up.

So, here's something nobody mentioned when I was younger: having lived isn't the same as being able to prove you did. Turns out, a whole existence doesn't count unless it comes with paperwork. Stamped and dated.

Now, I have had a very international upbringing. My parents treated the Pacific Ocean like a revolving door, as I have already said. Australia, America, back again, sometimes with stopovers that became entire school years. They said things like, “It’ll be an adventure!” which, translated, means, “We’re going to lose every official document you’ve ever had. Repeatedly.”

I’ve had more passports than ex-boyfriends. And I’m not bragging. Some kids collected baseball cards—I collected international stamps. My maternal grandparents were always somewhere in the world on the African continent with my aunts in tow. So, family visits often included several modes of transport and from the time I was a baby. And I’m missing one passport. Just one! But I have an official letter saying they are looking for it and will let me know it may be several months because that era is in files, not digitized. Again, the gap.

School records? Picture a trail of half-completed transcripts in at least three educational systems, spanning two hemispheres, none of which agree on how to spell my first name because I’m a girl named Jeremy. That is another story. One school blatantly said, “we don’t keep records 25 years or older.” But my photo archive (I was a scrapbooker once) and good friends found enough class photos in school uniform to verify I was there. Very official.

As for work history, good luck. Everyone I worked for in the ‘80s and ‘90s is either deceased, on a new career path or retired. Records? Shredded. Deleted. Or saved on a floppy disk in a filing cabinet on another continent.

Because one day, a Very Serious Person in a windowless room is going to ask, “How do we know you grew up here in Australia?”

And you'll say, “Because I still have the emotional ties and friends I talk to everyday because now we have tech (but I still have all the letters).

And they'll say, “That’s charming. Now give us a photo of you holding a Vegemite sandwich in front of a television showing Humphrey B Bear.”

Which brings me to my sage advice: Take photos. All the photos. Photos of you next to landmarks. With people.  Make the courtroom admissible. Get a selfie with Uluru and the timestamp. Keep every passport, expired or not. And for the love of bureaucracy, if someone offers you a Real ID during a pandemic, say yes.

Honestly, with the number of times I’ve crossed the Pacific, they should’ve just handed me a life jacket and permanent dual citizenship. Instead, I got anxiety and six kinds of luggage.

So yes. I lived. And I have the jet lag, expired passports, and a deeply held belief that the Pacific Ocean is my revolving door to prove it.

From Ancestral Roots to Jet-Set Boots
(Or: How I Ended Up in a  Scavenger Hunt for My Own Life)

So here I am, applying for an RRV—Resident Return Visa—for Australia, also known as "Welcome back, but only if you can prove you exist." It's been thirty years since I lived there in anything other than emotion, accent, and passive-aggressive lamington cravings. Thirty years. And applying for this visa? It’s like trying to retrace sixty years of steps in heels that were never comfortable to begin with, on cobblestones that weren’t just never digitized—they were possibly cursed.

You see, documents from the ’70s, ’80s, and even the whisper-soft early ’90s? They didn’t make it into the digital age. No, those precious relics are now probably holding up a wonky table in someone’s garage. My coming-of-age story is floating somewhere between a creased manila folder marked “Mum’s Stuff” and a scene from a dream I once had involving disco pants and a queue at the immigration office,


My parents, bless their migratory instincts, ping-ponged between Australia and America like it was just a couple of train stops. Sydney, L.A., Brisbane, San Francisco—we moved more than a witness in a mafia trial. Our shipping crates had frequent flyer status. Along the way, records got lost, tossed, or repurposed. I have a strong suspicion my birth certificate is currently doubling as a grocery list under a stack of National Geographics in a stranger’s attic.

And why didn’t I return permanently sooner, you ask? Picture a Greek tragedy, but with more Tupperware. I married the eldest of seven brothers, which means I married into a family that could start its own sitcom—or possibly a support group. Between my husband’s wildly successful career (America wouldn’t let us go) and our full-time role as the unpaid concierge service for his sprawling clan, we were busy. Eight years of “just one more crisis,” caring, accommodating, moving, smoothing, fixing, and raising our children while also managing the needs of everyone else. It was like juggling flaming swords while reading bedtime stories.

During this epic act of familial plate-spinning, my mother—my elegant, brave, hilarious mother—left her sun-soaked homeland and came to join us in America. Not for fun. Not for the weather. But for me, her only child, and her only grandchildren, whom she adored in the kind of way you see in movies where everyone ends up crying. She swooped in, helped raise the kids, and lit up our lives with her no-nonsense warmth and a stunning ability to find the perfect biscuit for any occasion. And then, far too soon, she was gone. Her absence is still loud.

But I did return to Oz. Many times. I introduced the children to their other homeland, recharged my soul with friends who are family, and took long walks in places that still remembered my feet. I couldn’t stay—but I never really left.

And now, in this strange, full-circle moment, I find myself unearthing pieces of my own life the way people usually unearth great-grandparents in ancestry databases. Except in this case, I am the ancestor. The one writing letters, begging bureaucracy, digging through closets for proof that yes—I was here. I was real. I had a library card.

In the process, something beautiful happened. I found people. I found me. Letters I wrote in 1984, friends I hadn’t spoken to in decades who still remembered the shape of my laugh, and who wrote letters of support like we’d just had tea yesterday. They said, “We know her. She belongs.” And somehow, that meant more than any official stamp. The firends I consider family, who I see on each visit that are now yearly and getting longer. The laughter we have, watching our children grow and often wondering over a glass of wine and cheese plate, "How did we survive?"

Meanwhile, my American life hums along—a fully formed story that exists parallel to this one, like two long-running shows on different networks. They never really meet, but together, they make up this intricate, strong, surprising fabric. Kind of like my paper art—layered, precise, delicate, and stronger than it looks.

So yes, I’ll keep rifling through boxes and emailing civil servants who don’t believe the 1980s happened. I’ll pack my documents, my memories, my friendships, and a sturdy pair of jet-set boots. The roots go deep. The suitcase is small. But the life? The life is big.

Color Me Impressed: How I Downsized My Suitcase and Upped My Travel Game (Thanks, Donna!)

Yeah, that).

This time? I'm rolling with a medium-sized case. Yes, darling. Medium.
Cue the gasps, clutch the pearls, and alert the baggage handlers—I have evolved.

Inspired by Donna’s effortlessly cool capsule strategy, I crafted my own wardrobe wonderland: lean, mean, and layer-friendly. Why? Because Queensland is rocking its “tropical winter” (read: humid summer with a hint of attitude), while Victoria and South Australia are doing their best Arctic impressions. One suitcase. Many moods. Challenge accepted.

So here I am—packing lighter, dressing smarter, and feeling sassier. I’m ready for climate plot twists, business meetings, barefoot beach walks, and every latte in between—without hauling a steamer trunk like a character in a Dickens novel.

From Paper Cuts to Tiny Worlds: My Crafty Quest for Miniature Magic

Creating little worlds in shadow boxes is like being the Fairy Godmother, but for paper. Just wave a glue stick and—poof!—a miniature paper village appears. I’ve been at this paper artistry game for so long, I might’ve started back when the dolls of Racketty-Packetty House were still hoping for a bit of glue and glitter to brighten their days. My grandmother Josephine—Grammy—read me that story so many times during our visits that it must’ve sparked my obsession with crafting miniature magic. Over the years, I’ve gathered enough paper, images, and glittery doodads to rival Smaug’s treasure hoard—except mine glitters more (and is about a thousand times harder to organize without an avalanche).


I often film the creative process, which sounds glamorous until you realize it’s mostly me talking to myself and juggling ten different projects at once. (The glue and paint need time to dry, anyway, right?) Plus, my ADHD doesn’t exactly help with the whole “focus on one thing” idea. One minute I’m deep into crafting a shadow box, and the next I’m making greeting cards—because why not? It’s the perfect way to use up all those tiny bits and bobs that are scattered everywhere, just begging for a purpose.



I’ve found that letting something sit for a while really helps the creative process. When I come back to it later, I always seem to see things in a new light—like I’ve suddenly got fresh eyes for the project. It’s as if time away gives my brain permission to make new connections and find solutions I might’ve missed before.

Here’s why: When we step away from a task, our brain switches from the focused, problem-solving mode (the prefrontal cortex) to the more creative, big-picture mode (the default mode network). This allows our subconscious to work in the background, making associations and connections without the pressure of actively thinking about it. This is why we often have “aha” moments after a break, when our brain has had time to process and come at the problem from a new angle.


So here I am, sitting in a universe where shadow boxes hold tiny, layered forests of paper trees, collaged wood letters spell out inspiring words while wearing their mismatched patterns like a badge of honor, and handmade greeting cards bring bursts of color and texture to the tiniest of messages. My desk is a battlefield of stray paper scraps, glue sticks that have mysteriously disappeared mid-project, and scissors that seem to have developed a mischievous habit of hiding under the nearest pile of cardstock.

Sure, my vacuum cleaner is now the sworn enemy of stray confetti, and my cat occasionally walks around with a random sequin stuck to its fur. But that’s the beauty of imagination: it spills over, breaks the rules, and even turns your dining table into a glitter-filled disaster zone.

Because, at the end of the day, when you’ve got tiny trees, miniature houses, and a world of endless possibility—all born from your own hands—it’s impossible not to smile.

And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Imagination is messy, chaotic, and absolutely worth it.

Welcome to Craft Limbo

Hello.  I’m here to talk about creating art. We will dive into the thrilling world of collaged/painted wooden letters and handmade greeting cards—because nothing says "I’m a functioning adult" quite like making a greeting card that could’ve been purchased at CVS for $4.99.

But who wants easy? We’re here for the journey, for the glue stains on our fingers, the slow realization that maybe glitter was a terrible life choice. Spoiler alert: it’s always too much.

Wood Letters

Is it just me, or does handing someone a giant, decorated letter feel like an over-the-top way of reminding them what their name starts with? “Here’s an ‘M,’ Marcy, just in case you’ve forgotten.” However they do make wonderful New Baby gifts and Nursery decor.



Wood letters are a blank canvas, just waiting to be decorated in a way that would make any artist feel like they've tumbled down the creative rabbit hole. They make fun gifts, charming wall décor or in a pinch, strange paperweights.

Process:

  • Step 1: Acquire wooden letters. Buy them, don’t chop down a tree to make them yourself. We’re not pioneers.
  • Step 2: Make a collage. I use whatever’s overflowing from my craft stash: the mountain of patterned paper, printed images and enough craft supplies to open my own store. Basically, anything from my hoard that makes me question why I thought I'd ever need this much glue.
  • Step 3: Stick it all on the letter using the mystical substance known as “Mod Podge.” Mod Podge is like hope in a jar; it dries clear, but you won’t believe that until the third layer. Trust the process, like you do with your therapist.
  • Tips for Readers: If you’re not sure where to start, just glue random stuff together until it looks right. You can always say, “It’s abstract.”

  • Extra points if you can make someone misty-eyed by claiming it symbolizes “the mess we all pretend to have figured out.”

Handmade Greeting Cards

Because Hallmark Isn’t Weird Enough
In a world where people can text you a GIF that says “Happy Birthday,” nothing says “I care too much” like a handmade greeting card. It’s also a great excuse to use up all those art supplies you hoard.

I like to think of greeting cards as tiny propaganda posters for human emotion. They’re your chance to convince someone that you care deeply about them… or at least care enough to cut out little paper hearts and glue them onto cardstock.


Process:

  • Step 1: Get some cardstock. Or cereal boxes. This isn’t the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
  • Step 2: Arrange a collage using images and paper scraps that could pass as whimsical, or at least “delightfully haphazard.” If anyone questions it, just tell them you were going for a charming mixed-media vibe.
  • Step 3: Add a heartfelt message inside, something along the lines of, “I made this because I like you enough to spend 45 minutes with scissors and glue.” If you’re feeling adventurous, weave in some obscure references. People enjoy cryptic clues, even if they’re the kind that confuse more than they clarify.

Tips for Readers:

  • If your card doesn’t look quite right, call it “Dadaism” This works 100% of the time.
  • Don’t stress if your handwriting is messy; it only enhances the charm. I mean, even Picasso probably had a scribble or two in his time!
